Vasile Nedelcu graduated in Stage Directing in 1995 from the prestigious Bucharest University of Theatre & Film, and taught for seven years in the same school, directing in parallel for different professional theatres. In 1995 and 1998 his productions were selected as amongst the best shows of the year at the Romanian National Theatre Festival. He completed his MA in Aesthetics and Art of Theatre in 2001. He moved to England in 2002 and works as a director and teacher. He created Atelier Theatre with his wife, Flora Smith, in 2009/2010, incorporating it as Atelier Theatre Studio, in 2016. He recently took 6 weeks out from the Atelier to direct the company of the Sica Alexandrescu Theatre, Brasov in Goldoni's The Liar, which is now playing in rep to full houses.

What Shall We Do With The Cello? VAULT Festival 8-12 February 2017
"Considering that the run is only five days, the actors have been impeccably drilled by director Vasile Nedelcu for Atelier Theatre Studio, using both physical and verbal skills perfectly in an unusual but engrossing political play that deserves to be seen much more widely." - Philip Fisher, British Theatre Guide
"The scene descends into absurd, farcical, physical comedy chaos. Each stranger has their own descent into total madness as they try to endure the awful cellist, and we are literally moments behind them. After the beautiful silence of a brief respite was broken, I genuinely thought I was going to start shredding my anorak in frustration. The tension in the room was shattered again and again by a comic line, or a well-timed look, and we were brought along on a rollercoaster of frustration and hilarity almost utterly against our will." EJ Stedman, TLE, 12 February 2017
What Shall We Do With The Cello? Romanian National Theatre Festival 2001
"In my opinion, Vasile Nedelcu could be considered the champion of Romanian texts of undeniable difficulty, inspirationally staged. His productions assert an authentic artistic vocation and a professional destiny that is worthy of our interest." Ion Parhon, Romania libera, writing about Vasile Nedelcu's first production of "What Shall We Do With the Cello?" 29.01.2001
Peer Gynt at the Glasshouse Festival 2000:
"The production superbly brings out the brilliance of Ibsen's vision. With Romanian director Vasile Nedelcu at the helm, the show is endlessly inventive" - Terry Grimley/Birmingham Post
"Directed by Romanian Director Vasile Nedelcu, and staged with considerable visual flair... this was a theatre of an impressive quality. (.) The brilliant use of masks - all characters but Peer and Solveig were masked - and of puppetry, the wonderful shadow-play of seduction scene in the desert, the acrobatics and clowning, made this production that, had Ibsen himself been there, would made the playwright weep with joy and relief, as Peer wept at the play's end". Birmingham Words
The Snow Queen - winner of best family show at the Brighton Festival 2005
"No tacky tinsel, no pop songs, no cheap jokes, just pure magic. Truly enchanting." The Observer
"This is a show to stimulate young imaginations and show them the beauty, thrill, drama, and wonder of stories. Few productions come as clever and captivating as this." Derby Telegraph
